Kash Patel, 45, oversees the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Patel directs 37,000 staff members in 55 US field offices, along with 350 smaller outposts and more than 60 overseas bases.

His career advanced swiftly among the Trump administration following joining as a security advisor in 2019, then later in 2020 took on the role senior advisor to the Pentagon leader.

The director, the son of Indian immigrants, is a ex-defense attorney and federal prosecutor.

In his confirmation hearings, he refuted maintaining a registry of "deep state" enemies, and playing down divisive statements from his past, such as calling investigators who investigated Trump as "corrupt actors".
