Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Submits Innocent Plea to Accusations of Lying Congress

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's attorney submitted the response on his behalf in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for various factors including that his defendant, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to submit various petitions to dismiss the case before a court case, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to assume control of the case.

The former director's case was originally handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey appeared in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his wife, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the court state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about several months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a backlash from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the Senate by saying he had not authorized someone at the agency to release to journalistic entities data about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media the former director published to his Instagram after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are costs to challenging the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "So let's have a court case."

The charges against James Comey emerged after Donald Trump shared on social media demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and additional individuals.
